Honorable Charles G. Reynard
Eleventh Judicial Circuit, State of Illinois
Charles Reynard is Circuit Judge of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit, State of Illinois. Before becoming Circuit Judge, he served as State's Attorney for McLean County, Illinois from 1987 to December 2002. He has also been Assistant State's Attorney, an Assistant Public Defender, and was in private practice for nine years. He co-authored two editions of Voir Dire in Child Victim Sex Abuse Trials, A Strategic Guide for Illinois Prosecutors (1995 and 1996). He also authored The Violence Stops Here: Prosecuting Domestic Violence (1999). Mr. Reynard served as Chairman of the Continuing Legal Education for Illinois Prosecutors Committee (CLEIP) since its inception in 1995 until he became Circuit Judge. He was appointed by Attorney General Jim Ryan to serve on the founding board of the Illinois Violence Prevention Authority and served on the Board of Directors of that organization until 2002. Currently, he is on the faculty for the Judicial Education Division of the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts and is Topic Editor for the redevelopment of the Domestic Violence Bench Book for use by Illinois Judges.
In 1996 he received United Way recognition as Volunteer of the Year for the McLean County Child Protection Network. In 1998 he received the Human Dignity Award from the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence and recognition for his office's Domestic Violence Legal Advocacy Program from the National Association of County Officials. In 1999, Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan named Mr. Reynard's office Illinois' outstanding prosecutor-based victim assistance program. In 2004, the Children's Advocacy Centers of Illinois (CACI) recognized him with their first Champion for Children Award.
Mr. Reynard is former co-chair of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids Illinois and former chairman of the governing board of the Unified Illinois Prosecutor Training Program. He persuaded McLean County Government to become the first governmental member of CAEPV in 1999 and has been active with CAEPV in various projects since that time. Reynard is a graduate of Loyola University School of Law.
Reynard is a poet whose poems often draw upon his work as a lawyer and judge. They have appeared on WGLT Public Radio’s “Poetry Radio”, also in the anthology Where We Live Illinois Poets (edited by Kathleen Kirk, 2003), the 2004 Emily Dickinson Awards anthology by Universities West Press, the literary journals AfterHours, Apocalypse, Crab Orchard Review, Kaleidowhirl (on-line), New Verse News (on-line), as well as National Catholic Reporter. He was a 2003 finalist for the Gwendolyn Brooks award for emerging poets, and recipient of a Jo-Anne Hirshfield Memorial Poetry Award in 2007. He is co-editor (with Judith Valente) of Twenty Poems to Nourish Your Soul (2005, Loyola Press).
